1 min readMysuru: Abhimanyu, the 58-year-old-elephant from Mattigodu Elephant Camp, is once again set to carry the 750-kg golden howdah, adorned with the idol of Goddess Sri Chamundeshwari, during the grand Jamboo Savari procession.
This year marks Abhimanyu’s fifth time taking on this prestigious role, a highlight of the 414th Vijayadashami celebration, which began on Saturday.
The ceremonial placing of the Ambaari (golden howdah) on Abhimanyu was overseen by the members of the Mysore royal family, including Pramodadevi Wadiyar and Yaduveer Wadiyar.
Abhimanyu, who has earned fame for his calm demeanour and confidence, is trusted by the Karnataka Forest Department and has been affectionately called “AK 47 famed” due to his reliability. Forest department staff and a veterinarians team will walk alongside him to ensure his well-being throughout the procession.
Mysuru’s royal family has long held elephants in special regard, and the elephants that have carried the howdah such as the famous Jayamarthanda and Arjuna are remembered for their strength and grandeur.
This year, Abhimanyu, known for his calm and commanding presence, is accompanied by fellow elephants Hiranya and Lakshmi, as they make their way from Mysore Palace to Bannimantap, continuing this cherished tradition.
