Mysuru Zoo sees record donation, Minister hands over Rs 2.63 cr

Mysuru: Despite the difficulties faced through the lockdown implemented due to the deadly Corona virus, many came forward to do their bit to animals in Sri Chamarajendra Zoological Gardens in Mysuru. They either adopted or contributed monetarily.
On Saturday, District Minister S T Somashekar handed over the third consignment donation, Rs 2.63 crore to the Zoo authorities.
Minister Somashekar was instrumental in raising donation to the zoo as it completely depends on the entry fee. Infosys Foundationchairperson Sudha Murty too had donated Rs 20 lakh to the Zoo.
Somashekar told mediapersons that the Zoo Authority of Karnataka has requested the state government to reopen the Zoo. “I have interacted with the Forest Minister on this. After considering the guidelines, we hope to reopen the zoo to public by June 1,” he informed.
Zoo Authority of Karnataka member secretary B P Ravi said that lockdown loss is estimated to be around Rs 6 to 7 Crore in the zoo, while Banneraghatta Park loss is pegged at Rs 8 Crore.
He further said that the animal adoption scheme drew huge response during the lockdown, as people from across country and abroad adopted animals and Rs 2.5 Crore was collected. The zoo has submitted a proposal to the state seeking financial aid.
“Earlier 10,000 tourists visited Zoo now it has reduced to 1000 on average. So social distancing and screening will not be a burden. In Our Zoo, there are 100 enclosures with complete barricades. We are ready to reopen the Zoo,” Ravi added.
Zoo Executive Director Ajith M Kulkarni said that the Zoo witnessed highest donation in its history. Although Zoo recorded Rs 6 to 7 crore loss, the donations proved timely help, he said.
