Traditional Vajramushti Kalaga at Savari Totti of Mysore Palace
1 min readMysuru: The Vajramushti Kalaga, the fight between wrestlers belonging to jetty community is an essential ritual on Vijayadashami, since the rule of Wadiyars.
Today the kalaga will take place at Savari Totti at Mysore Palace premises, between 10.45 AM and 11 AM.
On the 10th day of the grand Dasara festival, the royal Vijaya Yatre will be taken out by the Wadiyars at Palace fort and the Banni Puja will be performed to the tree at Bhuvaneshwari Temple premises.
Royal Scion Yaduveer Krishnadatta Chamaraja Wadiyar will participate in the ceremonial rituals, as the titular head of the royal family, he will be taken in a silver chariot marking the Vijaya Yatre.
The Vajramushti Kalaga will see the participation of prominent wrestlers, including Mysuru’s own Jetti Balaram, Bengaluru’s Narayana Jetti, Chamarajanagar’s Srinivas Jetti and Channapatna’s Raghavendra Jetti.
The Vajramushti Kalaga is a centuries-old tradition, dating back to the Vijayanagara Empire. Celebrated as part of the Navaratri festivities, it showcases the strength and valour of the wrestlers.
The Jetti community, historically linked to the Royal family, served as elite bodyguards of the Maharajas and skilled warriors, loyal to the Wadiyars.
