Karnataka State Women’s Commission Chairperson’s surprise visit to KSRTC suburban bus stand
2 min readMysuru: Karnataka State Women’s Commission Chairperson Dr Nagalakshmi Chowdhary conducted a surprise visit to the KSRTC suburban bus stand, and identified several critical concerns and areas for improvement.
Below are the key observations made:
Mother Care Centre: The facility lacked basic amenities. There was no door, cradle or chairs, making it difficult for mothers and children to use the space comfortably and safely.
Handicapped-Accessible Toilets: The toilet designated for individuals with disabilities was found closed and had a broken door, rendering it unusable.
Toilet Charges: It was noted that all toilets charged money for usage, including for urination. This poses a financial burden on the poor, creating a barrier to basic sanitation needs.
Lack of Compassion for Women: A particularly distressing incident was observed where a woman was seen pleading and crying for access to a toilet to change her sanitary pad during her menstrual cycle. This highlights the urgent need for more empathetic and inclusive facilities.
CCTV Surveillance: The current number of CCTV cameras was deemed insufficient, especially considering the large volume of travelers passing through the bus stand. Enhanced surveillance is necessary to ensure the safety and security of all commuters.
Drinking Water: Free drinking water was not available for travellers. This lack of basic resources affects thousands of people, especially during hot weather.
Overhead Water Tank: The tank used for water supply had not been cleaned and was contaminated with fungus, posing a health risk to users.
Bus Frequency to Chamarajanagar: It was noted that the frequency of buses to Chamrajnagara is inadequate. Increasing the number of buses on this route would better serve the needs of travellers.
Dr Chowdhary’s visit underscores the urgent need for improvements in the infrastructure and services at the suburban bus stand to ensure better care, sanitation and safety for all, especially women and marginalised groups.
