Electric Vehicle sales surge as India strengthens its position across globe: H D Kumaraswamy
2 min readNew Delhi: The Federation of Indian Chambers of Commerce & Industry (FICCI) hosted the National Conference on Electric Vehicles on Tuesday at Federation House, New Delhi.
With the theme “Accelerating E-Mobility: Enablers and Imperatives,” the event witnessed active participation from policymakers, industry leaders, and experts.
Union Minister for Heavy Industries and Steel, H D Kumaraswamy, delivered the keynote address, highlighting India’s robust commitment to transitioning toward green and sustainable mobility.
“India stands at a critical juncture in its journey towards sustainable transportation. Electric vehicles represent not only an environmental commitment but a transformative shift for our economy, industry, and society,” stated Kumaraswamy.
The Minister underlined the government’s sustained efforts to strengthen the EV sector through flagship initiatives, including the FAME (Faster Adoption and Manufacturing of Electric Vehicles) scheme. The success of FAME I and FAME II, which supported EV adoption across two-wheelers, three-wheelers, four-wheelers, and public transport, has set a solid foundation for India’s e-mobility growth.
Kumaraswamy emphasised the impact of the PM E Drive initiative and the Production-Linked Incentive (PLI) scheme for Advanced Chemistry Cell Battery Storage. With a budgetary allocation of Rs 18,100 crore, the PLI scheme aims to achieve a manufacturing capacity of 50 GWh, with three companies already committing to 40 GWh. The PM E Drive scheme, with an outlay of Rs 10,900 crore, is actively fostering an expansive EV ecosystem, including incentives for manufacturers and infrastructure development.
Highlighting the progress achieved under these initiatives, the Minister shared key milestones:
– Electric two-wheelers (e-2W) sales surged to 5,71,411 units in 2024-25.
– Electric three-wheelers (e-3W), including e-rickshaws and e-carts, recorded 1,164 units, while e-3W sales in the L5 category reached 71,501 units during the same period.
– The PLI Scheme for Automobile and Auto Component Industry, launched in 2021, attracted Rs 74,850 crore in proposed investments, with Rs 17,896 crore realized by March 2024, creating 30,502 jobs.
Kumaraswamy also stressed India’s progress in areas like battery recycling, grid integration, and software-driven efficiency, which are solidifying India’s position in the global EV landscape. Furthermore, the Ministry is focusing on building a robust component manufacturing ecosystem for the battery ACC sector, engaging stakeholders on innovation, challenges, and opportunities in areas like anode, cathode and foil manufacturing.
“Innovation and research will be key in reducing costs and enhancing efficiency. Our research institutions, in collaboration with the industry, are working on battery technology, charging infrastructure, and recycling to improve EV adoption,” said Kumaraswamy.
Concluding his address, the Minister urged all stakeholders, including industry leaders and researchers, to continue their efforts toward making electric vehicles a primary mode of transportation in India.
The conference witnessed valuable exchanges on battery technology, sustainable transportation strategies, and policy frameworks, reflecting the government’s and industry’s shared commitment to accelerating e-mobility in India.
Among the esteemed guests present were Tarun Kapoor, Dr Anish Shah, Sulajja Firodia Motwani, Jyoti Vij and other prominent representatives from the industry.
