Demanding autonomous status for cultural institutions, theatre person Prasanna to observe day-long fasting
2 min readMysuru: Demanding autonomous status for cultural institutions, known theatre activist Prasanna will observe fasting for a day from Saturday evening to Sunday midnight (March 26 to March 27). Every year March 27 is observed as World Theatre Day.
Prasanna is exhorting the government to show its committment to grant autonomous status to all the cultural institutions related to Language, Art and Theatre.
Various drama schools in different States across the Country need to come out of the clutches of National School of Drama (NSD), New Delhi. Government should sanction more funds in order to propagate theatre activities in schools.
Cultural Institutions belong to the people and are not government institutions. Providing grants does not entitle the government to interfere in its affairs. But this interference, from government and politicians, have been increasing these days, posing a threat to their autonomy. This must stop, contended Prasanna.
National School of Drama in Bengaluru belongs to Karnataka. It has to be remodelled according to regional requirements and necessity. But the interference of the National School of Drama, Delhi will effectively be counter-productive in this aspect. This must stop.
It has been proved that the current
Education system in Schools has failed to nurture the importance of Language and Culture. Therefore, in order to cultivate a quality cultural mindset in students, the government should provide huge funds. The Local Parents Committee should hire qualified theatre personalities to instill interest in theatre among the Students.
In order to urge the government to consider the above mentioned requests, I shall observe a fast, from the evening of March 26 to the midnight of March 27, said Prasanna.
