Kodagu: A traditional supporter of Hindutva sentiments and a stronghold of BJP since two decades, Kodagu this time has swayed towards Congress.

In Virajpet, BJP’s sitting MLA K G Bopaiah lost against Congress candidate A S Ponnanna by a margin of 4,000 votes. Ponnanna polled a total of 83,128 votes and in Madikeri too, BJP MLA Appacchu Ranjan was defeated by Congress candidate Manthar Gowda who got 83,949 votes.

By fielding two youngsters, Congress’ strategy has worked wonders in the coffee land.

Bopaiah who saved BJP in 2008 as a Speaker of Legislative Assembly, failed to keep the party’s flag high this time.
