New Delhi: As anticipated, veteran Congressman M Mallikarjun Kharge was elected as All India Congress Committee (AICC) President on Wednesday.
Kharge polled 7,897 votes of the total 9,385 votes cast in the election held on Monday, defeating his only rival and Thiruvananthapuram Congress MP Shashi Tharoor who secured 1072 votes.
Kharge is now all set to replace interim Congress chief Sonia Gandhi, who has been occupying the post ever since her son and previous president Rahul Gandhi stepped down after the party suffered a severe drubbing in 2019 Lok Sabha elections.
With this, Kharge will be the non-Gandhi Congress president after a gap of over two decades.
Earlier, the Election agent to Congress presidential candidate Shashi Tharoor wrote to Congress Central Election Authority chairman Madhusudhan Mistry, alleging `extremely serious irregularities in the conduct of election in UP` and demanded `that all votes from UP be deemed invalid`.
