Rs 1.5 lakh worth tomato stolen from agriculture field in Hassan

Hassan: With the price of tomato soaring bringing a smile on the face of farmers in the State, on the flip side, it is facing a threat from thieves.

For the first time in the recent past, standing tomato crop estimated worth Rs 1.5 lakh was stolen in Hassan district on Tuesday night.  Dharani, a farmer in  Gonisomenahalli in Belur taluk had grown tomato in over one-and-a-half acres of the total two-and-a-half acres of land owned by him. 

According to police, the thieves stole the ready to harvest tomato and fled with the vegetable after loading it to a goods vehicle.

The retail merchants are selling tomato at not less than Rs 110 per kg. With over 50 percent of the crop lost due to lack of adequate quantity of rain in the district, the price of tomato is witnessing a surge.

Halebid police have registered the case.
