STROKE Don’t be the one

Mysuru: It was World Stroke Day on October 29. According to Indian Stroke Association, around 1.8 million people in India have stroke! So, not to be the one amongst those who have stroke, the executive council of Indian Speech-Language and Hearing Association (ISHA) is here to answer 5 common queries on Stroke that would help in preventing it.  

  1. What is Stroke?

It is a medical emergency that occurs when there is a interruption or reduction of blood flow to parts of your brain.

 

  1. To whom does it happen?

Generally observed in those individuals who have

  1. high blood pressure levels (High B. P.)
  2. taken overtreatment with blood thinners
  3. met with an accident resulting in brain damage
  4. protein deposits in blood vessels

 

  1. What are the common consequences of stroke?

The most common consequences post-stroke are:

  1. Difficulty in speaking and understanding what others are saying
  2. Paralysis on the opposite of the body to the damaged side of the brain
  3. Psychological instability
  4. Unable to carry out daily activities unlike before

 

  1. What are the early signs of stroke and how can we prevent more damage after the stroke has occurred?

B.E.F.A.S.T. is the simple acronym which helps you in remembering how to figure out stroke and what call do you need to take.

B – Balance: Loss of balance

E – Eyes: Trouble seeing, blurred or loss of vision

F – Face: Drooping on one side due to weakness

A – Arm: paralysis, numbness, weakness on one side

S – Speech: Slurred speech

T – Time to immediately take the person with stroke to the hospital and get immediate medical care

 

  1. What are the ways to prevent stroke?
  2. Control high blood pressure
  3. Do moderate exercise everyday
  4. Eat healthy and balanced diet
  5. Reduce your cholesterol
  6. Maintain a healthy Body Mass Index (BMI)
  7. Stop smoking and consumption of alcohol
  8. Keep your heart healthy
  9. Control diabetes
  10. Stay happy and do not stress yourself

So, on this World Stroke Day, let us all take an oath that we will spread this piece of information to our entire dear and near ones and help in preventing stroke. Stay happy and healthy.
