Tavarekatte lake at foothill of Chamundi turns into new bird paradise

Mysuru: Following copious rains in the last few days, many water bodies have got a new lease of life.

Tavarekatte Lake or Tavarekere at the foothill of Chamundi has sprung back to life attracting birds of different species. Courtesy the rain water that has resulted in brimming of the lake. It is after a gap of nearly decade that the lake has reached its maximum level. Birds including ducks, egrets and other small birds have found a new place to roost here.

Tavarekatte is the second major attraction for the visitors to Chamundi Hill. Recent rain has created a number of rivulets with water flowing from Hill to Tavarekatte. Whenever sufficient rainfall is received, the lake by name Hirikere atop Chamundi Hill will be full followed by Devikere also atop the Hill, Tavarekatte and finally Karanji Lake.

Since many years Tavarekatte didn’t see such amount of water. Now Tavarekatte is looking like a mini bird sanctuary with winged attractions. Two islands in the lake with trees look like aviary.

Tavarekere was rejuvenated in 2018-2019 by J K Tyres under Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) programme along with District Industries Centre. Total project cost was Rs 16.5 lakh and lake area 12.5 acres and the implementing partner was MYRADA Kaveri Pradeshika Samsthe.
