Who’s the next CM? Everyone has their favourites!

2 min read

Bengaluru: After the euphoric win in Karnataka Assembly elections, the Congress has a task ahead to choose a chief minister, now. Although, the Congress party leaders claim that the task is left to the party high command, KPCC president D K Shivakumar and former chief minister Siddaramaiah are constantly being projected as hot favourites for chief minister’s post by their supporters.

As the results were declared throughout the State, supporters of Shivakumar have put up a banner stating “Our future chief minister” in front of his house in Sadashivanagar.

Earlier too, when Shivakumar was asked about his chief ministerial aspirations, he has maintained that the party high command will decide on that. With the party trouncing the BJP with a 135 seats in 224-Assembly and Shivakumar spearheading the campaign, many are claiming that he is an obvious choice.

However, no one can ignore Siddaramaiah, given his previous stint as chief minister and his vast experience. Besides, he too, along with Shivakumar, steered the Congress to cut BJP’s steadfast march in Karnataka. When the results were almost clear about his winning in Varuna against BJP’s V Somanna, his son and former MLA Dr Yatindra Siddaramaiah had stated that for the welfare of the State, Siddaramaiah should be made the chief minister.

Now, a social media post by supporters of Priyank Kharge urging him to be the chief minister has gone viral. Priyank Kharge who faced EC’s notice for commenting on Modi and allegedly receiving threats by his opponent and BJP Manikanth Rathod in Chittapur constituency has emerged victorious. With his reelection and his father, Mallikarjun Kharge being the AICC president, his supporters hope that he has a better chance. Besides, the dalit factor may work in his favour too, they believe.

But amidst all these choices, the Congress has a bigger responsibility of taking the confidence of Lingayat voters, who form the dominant number in the State’s total population.
