2 min readMysuru: There was excitement everywhere at the KSRTC and City bus stand in the City where the Congress government’s much-talked ‘Shakti’ scheme in which women get to travel around the State for free got unveiled on Sunday. One could see long queues in the bus stand with only women passengers in sight. Their happiness and excitement were palpable.
District in-charge Minister Dr H C Mahadevappa issued tickets to some of the women passengers here in the City to officially launch the scheme. It is said that almost four lakh passengers are dependent on government-run buses in the City and out of which 2 lakh are only women. This scheme is being dubbed as a means to empower women.
Earlier, the scheme was launched with much fanfare in Bengaluru. Chief Minister Siddaramaiah launched the scheme by tendering tickets to Chief Secretary Vanditha Sharma. Deputy Chief Minister D K Shivakumar, Transport Minister Ramalinga Reddy and Shivajinagar MLA Rizwan Arshad were present. CM and his colleagues boarded the BMTC bus from Majestic to Vidhana Soudha. Besides, bus plying between Bengaluru and Dharmasthala was flagged off to launch the scheme where women travelling to Dharmasthala enjoyed an absolute free ride.
Reacting to the criticisms that the BJP is levelling at the Congress, Deputy Chief Minister D K Shivakumar said that if there are issues with the scheme, the party would address it internally. With the launch of the scheme, the party has sent a clear message to the whole nation that the Congress party not only makes promises but also work diligently to fulfill them, he said.
